On Thursday, January 31, LHS Scholars Bowl team members Matt Kirkendall, Bodey LeRoux, Zachary Jansonius, Jed Peace, and Ian Sparks traveled to Atwood to participate in the 1A Regional Scholars Bowl tournament. There were 14 teams competing. The Trojans first competed in pool play. They defeated Northern Valley, Cheylin, St. Francis, and Weskan. They finished with a record of 4-2 and placed 1st in Pool A. Leading scorers for the Trojans were Matt with 70 points and Bodey and Zachary with 50 points. They then advanced to Finals where they defeated Wheatland/Grinnell and Rawlins County. They lost in a tie break to Greeley County and then were defeated by St. Francis and Hill City to finish with a finals record of 2-3. They placed 4th overall. Wheatland/Grinnell finished in 1st place and Hill City took 2nd. Leading scorers for the Trojans were Bodey with 35, Matt with 30, and Zachary with 25. Congratulations to the LHS Scholars Bowl team on a terrific season!
The Phillips County Spelling Bee was held Wednesday, January 30, at Thunder Ridge Middle School. Thirty spellers from Logan, Phillipsburg, and Thunder Ridge competed in the bee. Logan was represented by 4th graders Taden Gottschalk, Emma Traxler, and Brayton Woods; 5th graders Case Ashmore and Austin Leanna; 6th graders Kendra Alexander, Ryan Prewo, and Tye West; 7th grader Grayci White; 8th grader Kylee Uhland. At the beginning of round four only five spellers remained. Three spellers were eliminated in this round, including Austin. The bee went two more rounds before Hallie Jerby was crowned champion and Lili Joyce was runner-up. There was then a spell-off for third place. Austin was the only speller to spell his word correctly so he was awarded 3rd place. Congratulations to Austin and to all of the Logan spellers!
The Logan Spelling Bee was held on Monday, Jan. 21 with 26 spellers competing. After four rounds 11 spellers remained: 4th graders Brayton Woods, Emma Traxler, Taden Gottschalk; 5th grader Austin Leanna; 6th graders Kaitlyn Alexander, Kendra Alexander, Ryan Prewo, Rhett Kats, Tye West; 7th grader Grayci White; and 8th grader Jersey Voss. In Round 5, Brayton, Kaitlyn, Kendra, and Jersey were eliminated. Rhett, Austin, and Tye all tied for 5th place as they went out in Round 6. After Round 7, 4th place went to Grayci. Ryan received 3rd place at the end of Round 8. Taden and Emma then battled 4 more rounds until Emma was crowned champion when she correctly spelled “mockingly” and “furled”. Other students participating in this year’s Bee were Mara Kats, Cydnee Rider, Hailey McClurg, Kylee Uhland, Caleb Sparks, Graci Bliss, Kaden Graham, Stanley DeWitt, Mayson Vahling, Collin Sparks, Gavin Gottschalk, Cora Ashmore, Buster States, William Knowles, and Case Ashmore. The County Spelling Bee will be held in Agra at Thunder Ridge Middle School on Jan. 30 at 9:00 AM. Congratulations to champion Emma Traxler and runner-up Taden Gottschalk!
On January 16 the LHS Varsity Scholars' Bowl team traveled to Ransom to compete in the Western Kansas Liberty League Scholars' Bowl tournament. There were 12 teams competing. The Trojans finished with a record of 8-3 defeating Brewster, Palco, Cheylin, Healy, Triplains, Northern Valley, Weskan, and Heartland Christian. They finished in a tie for 3rd place with Northern Valley and Golden Plains. The tie breaker is determined by head to head competition. Since Golden Plains had defeated both Logan and Northern Valley, they were awarded the 3rd place medals. Logan officially finished in 4th place. Competing for the Trojans were Matt Kirkendall, Bodey LeRoux, Zachary Jansonius, Jed Peace, and Ian Sparks. Leading scorer for the Trojans was Bodey with 225 points. Congratulations to the LHS Scholars' Bowl Team on a job well done!
The PreK-6th grade students held their Christmas concert on Nov. 27 under the direction of Mr. Paul Prewo. The singers entertained a packed house with several tunes including "Little Snowflake" from the Kindergarten and First Grade, "Santa is Coming to Town" from the Second Grade, "Frosty the Snowman" from the Third Grade. The 5th and 6th graders sang "Come Ye Thankful People Come." A highlight of the night was the Fourth Graders singing "12 Days of Christmas" as the 6th graders performed a dance that kept everyone laughing.
The Logan Jr/Sr High Music Department presented their holiday concert "Sounds of the Season" on Friday, Dec. 14 under the direction of Mrs. Vesta Jo Still. The bands and choirs performed several songs including "Christmas Noel," "Monotone Angel," and "The Christmas Song" to complete the first semester of school and to wish the crowd a happy holiday season.

The 6th grade class has been busy creating slide shows for the new TVs in the high school and elementary hallways. While the students have had fun researching topics such as riddles and weird jobs, the presentations also include interesting facts, weather and the Week Ahead. This is also a great place for student reminders. The next time you are at the school for a ball game or concert, take a look!
