World History

Course Description:

This course offers an overview of World History.  We will begin with the advent of farming and cover major historical events through the present day.  There are three themes that we deal with when we study history:

1.  Causes:                        What caused _____ to happen?

2.  Conduct:                      What actually occurred?

3.  Consequences:            What was gained or lost as a result of _____?

 

Course Objectives:

1.              Students will know why farming changed the world when it was first introduced.

2.              Students will know the economic and religious basis of early civilizations in India and China.

3.              Students will know the difference between the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, and Empire periods in Egyptian history.

4.              Students will be able to explain the origins and significance of Judaism as the world’s first “one-god” religion, as well as Judaism’s major beliefs.

5.              Students will know the history of the Roman Republic and later Roman dictators.

6.              Students will be able to give examples of internal and external problems that led to the decline of the Roman Empire.

7.              Students will know the history of the development and spread of early Christianity.

8.              Students will know how Europe was weakened by the Crusades.

9.              Students will know how Europe was affected by the Black Death at various times.

10.           Students will know what led to the rise of the Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, French, and English as colonial powers.

11.           Students will describe the impact of the Industrial Revolution on the rest of the world.

12.           Students will explain the rise and fall of Napoleon.

13.      Students will know what nationalism and militarism are and how they led to World War I.

14.      Students will evaluate Wilson’s 14 Points.

15.      Students will know strengths/weaknesses in the areas of science, technology, human resources, and natural resources of Allied and Axis powers during World War II.

16.      Students will know why the Holocause occurred, and why other countries did nothing to stop it.

17.      Students will know what NATO and the Warsaw Pact were and why they were formed.

18.      Students will know the history of ethnic problems in the Balkan nations.

Method of Instruction:

This course will be taught through class discussion and with the use of the materials mentioned above.  Students will be active participants in these teaching methods.
