German I Syllabus

 

 

General Information:

            Hour:                   7th hour (2:15-3:10)

            Room:                 106

            Instructor:            Mr. Hofaker

            Required Text:     DEUTSCH:  Entdecken Wir Es!, 2nd ed, by Edda Weiss;

                                         Deutsch Heute, 6th ed, by Moeller; and other selected works

            Prerequisite:        German I

 

Course Description:

German I introduces the student to the German language and culture through a variety of approaches.  New vocabulary to be taught is presented in context with an illustration to assist with comprehension.  Vocabulary exercises immediately following provide the opportunity to practice and use new words both orally and in written form.  Structure-drills and grammatical explanations insure additional practice and understanding.  Dialogues and readings convey important information on everyday life and culture of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.  Cultural notes (called Land und Leute) provide more concise in-depth information on similarities and differences between German-speaking cultures and that of the students.

 

Course Objectives:

  1. To correctly spell and pronounce months, days, numbers and letters in German
  2. To understand and fluently use common phrases of the German language.
  3. To properly form sentences using various forms of verbs.
  4. To differentiate between masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns in German.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of the nominative, accusative, and dative cases.
  6. Recognize the structural difference between regular and inverted word order.
  7. To correctly use accusative pronouns, dative pronouns, and possessive adjectives in conversations.
  8. Demonstrate understanding of past tense through correct use of helping verbs and various verb forms.
  9. To become more fluent in the written and spoken German language.
  10. To develop a greater understanding and appreciation of Germany, its language, its customs, and its culture.

 

Method of Instruction:

This course will be taught using classroom lectures, “in-class” readings and presentations, question and answer discussions, and verbal and written practice exercises.  Short stories, mini plays, group activities, and internet research projects will also be used to increase students’ fluency.  Student participation is a must!

 

Method of Evaluation:

            The grading scale used in this class will be as follows:

                        A=98-100%        B+=86-89%        C+=77-79%        D+=67-69%        F=0-59%

                        A  =94-97%         B  =83-85%        C  =73-76%        D  =63-66%

                        A- =90-93%         B- =80-82%        C- =70-72%        D- =60-62%

 

            A student’s grade is determined by the following:

                        40% of the grade is chapter tests.

                        30% of the grade is daily assignments.

                        20% of the grade is research projects.

                        10% of the grade is vocabulary quizzes.

 

Note:           

***Daily assignments not turned in on time will be worth ½ credit.

***Daily assignments turned in “incomplete” will be graded as if they were complete.  (Additionally, students may be required to finish or “re-do” the assignment outside of class in the presence of the instructor.)
