            Room:                 106

            Instructor:            Mr. Hofaker

            Required Text:     Trigonometry:  Graphs & Models, 2nd ed., by Bittinger

            Prerequisite:        Algebra II/College Algebra

Course Description:

Trigonometry is a dual credit course designed for students who plan on attending college and pursuing a degree that involves higher-level mathematics courses.  The mathematics taught is very applicable to many fields in today’s working world.  The approach of this textbook is more interactive and more visual than that of most pre-calculus texts, and the goal is to enhance the learning process through the use of technology.  Use of the graphing calculator is integrated throughout the text.  For this reason, the student should lease a calculator from the school.($30 deposit/$20 refund if returned in good condition)  Trigonometry is a dual credit course offered from Colby Community College.  The student may earn 3 credit hours from CCC upon completion of the course.

Course Objectives:

  1. To learn the six trigonometric functions.
  2. To learn how to solve right triangles.
  3. To learn radian measure and circular functions.
  4. To learn how to find arc length and area of sectors.
  5. To learn how to graph the six trigonometric functions and their inverses.
  6. To learn how to find an equation from its graph.
  7. To learn how to prove identities.
  8. To learn the sum and difference formulas, double-angle and half-angle formulas.
  9. To learn to solve trigonometric and parametric equations.
  10. To learn the law of sines and law of cosines and the use of vectors.
  11. To learn about complex numbers and polar coordinates.

Method of Instruction:

This course will be taught using classroom lectures, chalkboard work, question and answer discussions, and some group work or projects.

Method of Evaluation:

            The grading scale used in this class will be as follows:

                        A=98-100%        B+=86-89%        C+=77-79%        D+=67-69%        F=0-59%

                        A  =94-97%         B  =83-85%        C  =73-76%        D  =63-66%

                        A- =90-93%         B- =80-82%        C- =70-72%        D- =60-62%

            A student’s grade is determined by the following:

                        50% of the grade is chapter tests, cumulative finals, and quarterly/semester projects.

                        40% of the grade is daily assignments.

                        10% of the grade is pop quizzes and/or chapter projects.

Note:

***Daily assignments not turned in on time will be worth ½ credit.

***Daily assignments turned in “incomplete” will be graded as if they were complete.  (Additionally, students may be required to finish or “re-do” the assignment outside of class in the presence of the instructor.)
